The number one reason that board members report having an unpleasant board experience, is that they never received a solid orientation. This makes complete sense. If board members don’t know the culture, the policies, the programs, the origin story, or the challenges, they may stay quiet in board meetings. They may not ask great questions for fear of stepping out of line.

This actually kills engagement and leads to confusion.

As you consider having board orientations for all new board members, you’ll need to know what things you want to include in that session. Maybe in a 1-2 hour orientation, you include the foundational documents like bylaws and mission, the programs, board responsibilities and information about good governance.

For others, they will want to include real training, and a look into the strategic plan (if you have one) or talk honestly about a recent crisis the organization experienced. Either way, this list will give you ideas about what is right for your organization.

Consider inviting all board members to all board orientations. Not only will the energy be higher, but existing board members can probably use the refresher. Seek feedback on how the orientation went so you can continually improve it. Remember, this is the most vital early step in board retention and an investment in later board success.

  • Chasen Brokaw, Co-Founder and Executive Director - Breaking Borders Inc.

"I am grateful for Sean’s insight and desire to share it with others. The board of directors is a fundamental part of any corporation, especially a non-profit, so I was thankful to learn more. As a Founder and CEO it is hard to motivate the board to get on my level. But the resources that Sean provided will help me do that! Check him out! We are a small non-profit. 5 board members, 2 volunteer staff and a budget of $15-20k a year. We don’t have committees because I have done most everything as the ED. Also we work internationally so it’s hard for the board to get more involved. But that is changing and your board agreement will help us do that."

““While fundraising is all-in-a-day’s-work for some of us, we often fail to realize that Board Members typically have little to no fundraising experience. Sean Kosofsky provides a roadmap for engaging current Board Members, politely parting ways with Members who are no longer a good fit and building a Board that actually fundraises!”"

"The title "Board Orientation Checklist" is such an understatement! This amazing document provides an ideal format for providing new board members a strong foundation for making decisions and getting involved right away. A tremendous added bonus is all board members can use the Checklist to refresh their own knowledge and then make wise decisions about what/when/how to change for the better."
